Trading Summer Analyst GPA questions
Hi all,
I apologize in advance if this post is a little long but I would really appreciate any help.
I currently have a 3.3 GPA; however, I am doing absolutely fantastic this year and would have to do something quite dramatic to not end up with atleast a 3.8 by the end of this semester. With that, my cumulative GPA should be a 3.5 at the end of this semester. My problem is that many banks (I am applying to s&t if that isnt obvious) have their resume drop deadline before this semester ends. I really want to put my GPA on my resume as a 3.5, but I do not know if this is a smart move. If the banks check my transcript before this semester ends they will think I am lying, but if they check it after everything will be fine. Advice?
Also, a related question, how much rounding is acceptable for the GPA and would a strong SAT/ACT (2300+/35) score atelast slightly offset a low GPA?
Thank you for your help in advance.
Averaging together Cumulative GPA plus semester GPA for resume
Averaging together you’re current or predicted GPA and your current GPA on your resume is a bad idea. If some unexpected event happens and your grades slip in one or two classes it could make a significant difference in your cumulative GPA. You've submitted a resume with an inflated GPA. If you get a return offer the bank will likely require transcripts. This can happen sooner in some cases. Then it’s a matter of whether the inflation is caught or not. However, it’s better not to risk getting an offer rescinded over a few decimal places.
Use whatever GPA you have currently as long as it meets the minimum requirement of the firm which is typically 3.2. At that point, there should be a focus on networking and getting someone at the firm to vouch for you. Once your foot is in the door you have the chance to blow them away in your interview.

Network. It relegates a lower GPA or test scores to a position of less importance. I literally have your exact same stats all the way down to the standardized test scores. I worked my ass off though, got an invite to an S&T superday at Morgan, was convincing in my presentation, and you know what? It worked..

A GPA is important, doubtless. But as long as you meet their minimum threshold (3.2 or 3.3 for most companies) to get yourself in the door, it's what you do to differentiate yourself that matters more than four tenths of a point on your transcript.
Will you elaborate on how you Networked your way into S&T at MS? Specifically, who you called/emailed i.e. VPs or human resources etc., how you got in contact with them, and what you said? That is impressive, do you go to a target school?
Another thing that you can do is when you (hopefully) get interviews through networking- good post from A Posse- is to bring an updated copy of your resume with your new GPA on it. That way you say something like "here's an updated resume with a higher GPA blah blah". GPA isn't the be-all-end-all, but higher is better. Good luck.
background checks aren't conducted until next spring for SAs

Thanks a ton for the incredibly helpful and detailed response! Sounds like you did all the work to land this position. I will be attending a few networking events in NYC over spring break. Do you have any other ideas or recommendations to make a lasting impression while at these networking events? Congratulations on the offer and good luck with the rest of the semester.
What is your major GPA? If that is currently above a 3.5, you can put that there and then cumulative as a 3.3 after it. Good SAT/ACT do help. Also make certain the rest of your resume is strong. Your interest, skills, activities, leadership, etc.
Do not stretch or misrepresent ever. Only headaches and deadends exist down that path.
Struggled my first few semesters with a major I couldn't stand. Currently have a 2.9 from a target school with great (read: GREAT) extra curricular activities/on campus stuff (varsity, club founders, etc). Resume has impressed a lot of people, but I've omitted my GPA. Should I continue to do so?
Put the SAT/ACT score on there... They won't do a background check before semester ends anyway... also, I have never been asked for a transcript for a bank if it was an internship position, though for FT I have to submit one after accepting the offer...
