Q&A: Incoming FT First-Year S&T Analyst From Someone Who DIDN'T Intern in S&T

Hi guys,

This site has been really helpful to me during recruiting and throughout my time in college so I wanted to give back and do an AMA to offer advice to current students who are going through/about to start recruiting. I'm an incoming first-year Analyst in Sales & Trading and graduating from college in May.

S&T was always my career choice, BUT I didn't intern in it this past summer because I couldn't get any internships in it – much less get any internship. However, I was able to secure a Summer 2021 internship in a sort of Middle Office role that had nothing to do with FO at a BB at the end of the recruiting cycle for Summer 2021. After the internship, I recruited full-time for S&T – I was able to get 3 offers before accepting 1 of them.

I'll list some stuff about me below:

  • Current senior at an undergraduate target school – (UMich / NYU Stern / Cornell Dyson)
  • Finance major with 2 non-business minors
  • Went from barely getting a Summer 2021 internship in something that I didn't like to getting multiple full-time S&T offers
  • Struggled a bit academically in school

Drop some questions and I'll be more than happy to answer them – I'll also answer any PMs I get!

I'm looking mainly at Equities, Fixed Income, and Structured Products – ideally, I'd like to be on the Electronic desk since that desk is experiencing double-digit growth each year across the street and I have a bit of a coding background which can help potentially weather out any downturn
