Thank You - BROKE IN!
WSO Admins and Users,
I just wanted to extend a sincere thank you to those at WSO and MI for all of their constructive criticism and advice over the past year. The advice of others and willingness to help kept me motivated to push longer and harder to chase my dream of becoming an investment banker.
I am coming from a Non-target school with no IB internship or banking background, but I was able to network my ass off, study hard, and persevere in the end by receiving a full time offer from a top middle market firm in their M&A division. I went through three Superdays, and ended up with an offer from my top choice that I believe would be the best fit and will help create a strong foundation for my future career success.
If anyone needs any advice or my point of view on how to break in coming from a non-target, please don't hesitate to reach out. I am always willing to help, and WSO is a GREAT resource to get started in your strategy!

Thanks so much guys! The support has been extremely appreciated!
congratulations!
care to go a little more in depth about your background?
also what did you find worked for you when you were networking? info interviews, cold calling vs cold emailing?
Profile says Florida, must've had a good amount of alumni to pull for him
Congrats
Congrats!! Always great to read success stories :)
@ Zenaku
Sure thing!
Well I'm a Finance major at a top state school with a 3.9 gpa, a private wealth management internship, a corporate finance internship, leadership positions in two top finance organizations at my school, and I am a nationally ranked olympic weightlifter. So I think my well "roundedness" was a huge contributor to my success.
As far as networking goes, the offer I received was with the bank I did the most networking with (big surprise). I actually organized a business trip with about 20 club members to go visit this bank, because the Director did his undergrad stint at my university. After the trip I sent him an email telling my interest, but got no response. (they get sometimes upwards of 100 emails a day so they won't always have time). Then about 7 months later I reached out to him again via email asking for an informational interview. I did that, then he advised me to reach out to the analysts as well; which I did. So I exchanged emails with the analysts and had informational interviews with each. I even offered to the bank to meet up with them for lunch or coffee whenever they had time in between deals. This never happened with their schedules, but I wanted to show just HOW BAD I wanted that damn analyst spot! I was then informed to come to their office for a mini-superday to interview with everyone there (It is a small regional office of a larger bank).
My interviews went pretty well. At one point it was 3 on 1 with the analysts grilling me on technicals and the Director looking more for fit questions. I was asked to give valuation methods, walk through a DCF, walk through an LBO analysis, valuing equity of a non public company, and some basic accounting questions; such as how the financial statements connect. My last interview was with the MD and he just asked about my story, then we talked about the economy in the U.S. and in Europe, and he asked me to send him my honors thesis. Next day, I got a call for the offer!
Congrats man! Are you gonna be located in Florida?
@ tiger
Yes sir! I will be in FL for at least 2 years.
That's some fucking hustle. Good on you, well deserved.
Thank you sir, I definitely didn't take it for granted and worked my ass off. I'm unimaginably excited and grateful for this great opportunity to be in the banking industry. It just goes to show with years of hard work, dedication, and a little luck you can reach your goals. Never take "no" for an answer!
I'm more impressed with the ranked Olympic weight lifter thing...but congrats on the offer!
Congrats man.
I have just recently begun my journey of breaking in from a non-target with no IBD internships so I may reach out to you for some advice and to keep me motivated.
As you said, networking is a huge part and I am finally starting to gain some traction with a couple of the boutiques and 1 MM I've been in touch with.
Thanks guys!
@aempirei: Sure thing man, feel free to reach out for any questions! I'm happy to help whether it be with resume/networking advice, or even how to run through technicals. Good luck in your quest for eternal glory!
Congrats Man, good luck with the analyst stint!
Much obliged!!! :D
Congrats. Remember, you didn't cure cancer. You are still an analyst at a regional investment bank. You didn't win yet... keep the Hustle.
Thanks! Yea I know I still have a long and tedious work ahead of me, but I am very excited for the challenge! Give 110% at every step, and I will not ever lose that competitive edge!
