MS Real Estate: JHU vs NYU

Hi guys, I'm a final year undergrad student in Taiwan that just got admitted to the NYU MSRE and the JHU MSREI programs. I was wondering if anybody who has experience with either can provide some insight.

I know that generally speaking, people consider NYU to be a better choice, but due to the COVID 19 pandemic , a lot of networking events in NYU has been cancelled and students are all taking online courses right now, so the advantages of studying in NYC seem to be reduced. Also I’m a bit concerned about the reputation of NYU School of Professional Study, is it something like an extension school?

Regarding JHU, one main attraction is that student get to apply for a second degree, and if I choose the STEM designated MSF as my second degree, I get to extend my OPT to 29 months, which is extremely pivotal for international student like myself. But I’m also aware that JHU isn’t really known for its business related programs.

Btw I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Real Estate Finance, and I work as a commercial RE intern at KnightFrank Taiwan(a RE consulting firm). My career goal is to serve as an investment analyst in a REPE in the U.S.

Any other information would be greatly appreciated! (Please forgive my poor English)

You can pursue those degrees later in your career. I only see two reasons why you are pursuing this NYU/JHU option, you either don’t have an offer lined up (I doubt that’s the case) or you are tying to work in the US.

I think you are better off pursuing those after having some years of work experience under your belt if you really want to go back to school and pivot into a buy-side gig.

Yep! I’m based in Taiwan currently, but I’m responsible for a lot of US REITs research project (particularly US office REITs), so I think I’ll become quite familiar with the US CRE market along the way of this job
