Thoughts about leveraging a BD Role at a large ($>100B) asset manager onto a deal team...
I recently accepted a job on business development team at a large asset manager. I came from M&A strategy consulting without a heavy finance background, thus any opportunity to transition into the AM world was worth it. My one qualm is that it's not on the deal team (albeit it does liaise with the deal teams weekly).
I am in my early 20s, so not all is lost, but I am looking for advice on how to best network, learn, and eventually transition onto a deal team. The AM is relatively lean currently, so my plan is to a) most importantly, do outstanding at the job I was hired for, b) find time to network with members of the deal team, c) absorb as much of the materials that pass my desk as I can.
Getting an MBA is not really an option for me due to personal finances, but any advice on how to best approach this would be greatly appreciated! There's not much information on BD/careers/etc., so even what may seem like basic advice is helpful.
P.S. They recently started a Healthcare fund which I have a background in (from consulting), so this might be the best place for me to start networking (?).
