Is It Worth It?

Relocating to NYC and am not finding good apartments in NYC ($2,750 budget - WTF?)

Found this affordable and amazing apartment ~35 minutes from work. I'd only commute to work 4 times a week. Is it worth it? All of the other apartments I considered are tiny, infested with bugs, still 25+ minutes out from work, etc.

Thanks

Based on the WSO threads, many individuals face similar dilemmas when considering relocating to NYC due to the high cost of living and the often less-than-ideal living conditions within a lower budget range. Here are some points to consider that might help you decide:

  1. Commute Time: A 35-minute commute in NYC is relatively standard and quite manageable, especially if it's only for four days a week. This could be a significant advantage over other options.

  2. Quality of Living: If the apartment you found is in better condition (e.g., larger, cleaner, no infestations) compared to others closer to work but with less desirable living conditions, it might contribute positively to your overall quality of life.

  3. Cost Efficiency: Staying within your budget while finding a satisfactory living situation can alleviate financial stress, allowing you to enjoy city life more fully.

  4. Work-Life Balance: Consider how this living arrangement affects your daily routine and work-life balance. If the quality and location of the apartment allow you more comfort and less stress, it might be worth the extra commute time.

  5. Future Opportunities: Living a bit further might also open up opportunities to explore different neighborhoods and experiences in NYC that you might not encounter if you lived closer to work.

In conclusion, if the apartment fits your needs and the commute is manageable, it could indeed be worth considering, especially given the challenges you've faced with other options. Remember, the right choice heavily depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle.
