Houston Apartments

Moving there soon for full time role - does anybody have any recomendations for good apartment complexes in the Heights / Rice Military area (or any other area)? I have been looking online but the reviews for most of them are pretty concerning.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, when moving to Houston for a full-time role, the Heights and Rice Military are indeed popular areas among young professionals. Here are some insights and recommendations for finding a good apartment in these areas or elsewhere in Houston:

  1. The Heights: Known for its unique charm, historic homes, and vibrant community, The Heights offers a mix of old and new apartment complexes. It's a great area if you enjoy a neighborhood with personality, local shops, and restaurants. While online reviews can be concerning, visiting the complexes in person or connecting with current residents through social media or forums can provide a more accurate picture.

  2. Rice Military: This area is closer to downtown and is known for its convenient location, offering easy access to parks, nightlife, and dining. Apartments here can range from modern complexes to more traditional townhomes. Again, personal visits and direct feedback from current tenants can be invaluable.

  3. Alternative Areas: Based on WSO threads, other areas recommended by finance professionals include Montrose, Upper Kirby, and Downtown. Montrose and Upper Kirby are praised for their central location, diverse food scene, and lively atmosphere. Downtown is suggested if you prefer to be in the heart of the city, though it's noted to be more expensive and bustling.

  4. Apartment Hunting Tips:

    • Visit in Person: Online reviews can sometimes be skewed. Visiting in person allows you to get a feel for the area and the apartment complex.
    • Network for Insights: Use your network or platforms like LinkedIn to connect with other professionals living in Houston. They can offer firsthand advice and recommendations.
    • Consider a Realtor: In Houston, it's common to use a realtor for apartment hunting, and their services are usually free for renters. They can help navigate the market and find deals not listed online.
  5. General Advice: Houston is a car-dependent city, so consider the commute to your workplace and access to highways. Also, the city's weather can be quite hot and humid, so amenities like a pool might be desirable.

Remember, finding the right place takes time, and leveraging your network along with personal visits can lead to finding a gem despite concerning online reviews.

Do you know where your job is located in Houston, and the distance you are willing to commute? Heights/Rice Military are nice but you can easily live in the med center, midtown, downtown, galleria, eado to name a few.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am not too worried about the commute so I am definitely open to anything within a reasonable distance - definitely will check out those areas.

Domain Heights is pricey but nice. I’ve heard that The Citadel off of 610 loop is nice as well. If you’re working in Downtown or Greenway Plaza, Upper Kirby has lots of good options as well.
