Where do I go from here? - What do I do next?

Hello everyone. This forum has been a great resource for me thus far. So I've decided to get involved and see if I could get some advice on my situation.

I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life at the moment. I'll try to give a brief summary of where I'm at:

I've been doing spending the last few years doing an honours degree in Economics w/ Math minor at a second-tier (non-target I guess) Canadian university. My first couple years were pretty mediocre doing random classes (e.g. History, Geography, etc.) and not scoring great grades. This has affected my overall GPA, and so my expected GPA for graduation will be about 3.3. The bright spot of my record though is in my last couple years which were spent exclusively on Economics and Mathematics courses. My GPA in Economics is about 3.8 and for Math 3.66. This includes a lot of Econ courses, many of them being fairly advanced (lots of Econometrics). My math courses are also fairly extensive (Calc sequence, LA, Analysis, Diff. Eqs., Optimization, and some more). I've also taken the GRE with a 170Q,161V,4.5AW score (no GMAT).

So throughout this period my plan all along has been to do a Ph.D in Economics and pursue a career in academia. Working in Finance has always kind of been seen as a "sell out" option (all my fellow students were also solely driven towards academia and this kind of brought about a stigma to working in private industry). Recently though my affection for academia has been fading and naturally I've been paying more attention to my alternatives. I've been doing some reading into finance trying to get more familiar with what the career choice may be like.

Anyway, getting to the most important part of my post: what do I do next?

Right now I'm applying to Masters in Econ programs. My school is fairly well ranked in Econ, and with my decent grades in Econ/Math I should be able to land in a strong masters program (e.g. LSE, Toronto). Would I be able to use a Masters in Economics to find my way into a good position in finance? Furthermore, how would a Ph.D in Economics fit in this context?

Now my alternative is to throw in some applications to other Masters programs. I think my primary option would be Finance programs (I'd be immensely grateful if you could recommend some programs to target given my academic info). Another option would be Quantitative Finance. I'm not sure if this is the option for me. I am interested in mathematics however I get the impression this career has its limits in the long term.

Again, I'm having a hard time figuring out what the hell I want to do, and any insight on this front is very welcome.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your help!
