Working in Charlotte

I will be working an IB internship at Charlotte this upcoming summer, but my goal is to work in NYC for buyside. Wondering how overall life and recruiting for exit opps differs from being located in Charlotte vs NYC.

Any tips on how to lateral/make most of the situation?

I currently work in Charlotte and have completed buyside recruiting. Being in Charlotte makes it more difficult, but not impossible. You’ll likely need to have some flexibility with your bank where you can fly up to nyc on Thursday and interview on Friday (most nyc funds hold super day interviews in-person). Overall, you are at a disadvantage, but I have seen many of my peers in Charlotte get nyc buyside jobs.

If by “best” you mean easiest for megafund/UMM buyside exits there’s realistically only two options. Jefferies (any group) or BofA levfin. Doubtful you’ll get tons of looks but might get lucky if you’re persistent and smart enough.

Best for regional buyside there’s a bunch of MM bucket shops - Blair, Houlihan, HW. They all place decently well particularly in Charlotte / southeast.

Best for pure M&A experience - the aforementioned bucket shops, as well as some other small pure-play M&A shops like BlackArch and Leerink.

Best for WLB (for the “lifers”) - a decent amount of Wells groups, the mostly nonexistent BofA groups outside of levfin, most Regions groups, 5/3rd, and KeyBanc
