Trying to make it from LATAM to UK PE/IB
Hi,
I am a PE Associate in Latin America trying to make it again in London. Long story short... last year I finished a finance related Masters at a target school in the UK. Although I wasn't able to secure a position (massive layoffs and I had no prior IB/PE experience; background is 3 years in economic consulting) I was able to secure a PE role in my home country and a UK grad visa.
Even though I have less than a year in the job (seen 8 transactions closed 2), what would be the best route if I want to make it back to the UK in PE or even IB while I still have my visa available?
Any advice would be much appreciated
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a PE role in Latin America to a PE or IB position in the UK can be challenging but feasible, especially with your background and current UK grad visa. Here are some strategic steps you might consider:
Leverage Your Master's Network: Since you graduated from a target school in the UK, reconnect with your alumni network. This can include reaching out to former classmates who are now in the UK finance industry, attending alumni events, and engaging with your school's career services.
Highlight Your Transaction Experience: Although your tenure in your current PE role is relatively short, having been involved in multiple transactions (8 seen, 2 closed) is impressive. Make sure this experience is prominently featured on your resume and discussed in your interviews. Tailor your resume to highlight skills and experiences most relevant to UK firms.
Consider Recruitment Agencies Specializing in Finance: These agencies often have a deep understanding of the needs of finance firms and can provide tailored advice and access to job opportunities that are not advertised publicly.
Prepare for the Move: If you are seriously considering the move, start preparing for the recruitment processes in the UK, which can include brushing up on technical skills, understanding the market trends in the UK finance sector, and possibly preparing for the CFA if you haven’t already done so.
Networking: Continuously expand your professional network by connecting with industry professionals on platforms like LinkedIn, attending industry conferences, and participating in webinars. Networking can often lead to referrals which are invaluable in competitive job markets.
Stay Informed About Visa Regulations: Keep yourself updated on any changes in visa regulations that might affect your ability to work in the UK. Since you already have a UK grad visa, ensure you understand the conditions and any potential pathways to extend it if necessary.
By focusing on these areas, you can enhance your chances of securing a position in the UK's competitive PE/IB landscape. Remember, persistence and networking are key in the finance industry.
