Need a Father in GS
Hey guys,
I am currently at a non-target school, and recently signed with a mm (HL, PSC, Gugg) bank in Houston. I realized that most bankers have family or friends that could help them and give them guidance. I unfortunately don’t due to having immigrant parents. So I was curious if the WSO community could answer a few of my questions regarding the next steps in my career. Don’t worry I’ll touch grass for the rest of college years.
-
Am I pigeonholed in energy? Don’t get me wrong, I love energy. I just don’t see myself doing this for the rest of life.
-
Most of my friends are signing places very prestigious, and was curious does prestige really matter in the world of banking. Does working at a mm bank in Houston make me a bad candidate for future jobs?

How does PE recruiting work as soon as you hit the desk. I’m very worried that I will end up at a bad PE, I’m just confused on if an MBA is necessary, how to study for PE interviews, how to also network while working etc. I’m just very unfamiliar with the PE world and don’t want to miss opportunities.
-
What are your thoughts on renewable PE. Do you think the political events slow the transition into renewables
-
What AUM is considered a good PE firm.
-
How can I be the best prepared for summer analyst role.
-
How can I go kill it in office politics while also killing it in the technical aspect of the job.
-
How do I save my analyst year salary. I don’t want to splurge, but would rather save. What resources/strategies can I use to become wealthy, and eventually create passive income, or enough for me to have a shit load in my retirement fund.
Sorry for the load of questions, just wanted everyone’s opinions on these. If y’all have any input that would be great! Thanks and have a blessed day!
Easy to pivot to general PE out of energy banking, hard to go to NY if you’re in Houston.
Prestige matters for PE recruiting, but you’ll still get all of the opportunities (ex high end NY)
If you want TX opportunities, PE recruiting lags compared to NY - a few of the bigger stuff started ~September, most didn’t go until Jan/Feb
