As far as i know the only difference between the too is the name. Resume comes from French and means "condensed" or "summarized". CV comes from latin curriculum vitae and means course of life. It's really a matter of parlance I guess. like you say lift in the UK and elevator in the US. You should be fine!
THe only difference is that it is more common to see 2 pages resumes, as opposed to CVs. But no matter what you should keep it to one page if you are first joining the work force.
