Early career advice: when to switch jobs
Background:
I have been working for a small REPE firm by headcount but large in AUM in Tx for nearly 3yrs (including 1yr as an intern through my senior year of undergrad). We have between $4-6 B AUM although little dry powder remaining for new deals and it’s unclear what things will look like in 2-3 years (new fundraise or ride out the current stuff).
When I first started, deals were flowing non-stop and I had the rare opportunity of underwriting deals/presenting to IC as an intern and learned a ton. I started full time when interest rates shot up and deals began to slow. I appreciated how hands on I was when things were so busy given how much I learned at that time, however, when things slowed, I found myself getting bored by not learning new things. I eventually want to transition on my own and am treating the beginning of my career as a time to learn and grow as much as possible rather than chasing a bigger paycheck.
Question:
My question is, now that things are slow and it’s unclear what direction our company will go in the future, should I begin to explore other options to learn more or stick with it and be thankful to have a position given the job market?
My advice would be to look around as you never know what your firm will do in the future. A lot of groups are focused on laying off as opposed to adding to the headcount, unless you feel firmly entrenched at your company and that they are utilizing you even in this down period, always look out for yourself but do not burn a bridge. Most groups understand the anxiety of the current cycle, just my two cents but keep in mind that only you know where you truly stand at your shop.
Thank you, appreciate your advice.
