Anyone been able to defer SA by a year due to illness?

Incoming SA this summer (London). Have became quite severely ill recently to the point where I know my performance during the summer will not be good at all. Was wondering whether anyone has been able to defer their SA by a year for a reason such as this. Any help is appreciated thanks.

Were they deferred to those people's final years or did they take a year out of university?

A big part of the internship program (both for you and for the bank) is making sure that you have the capabilities and desire to be a junior banker. If there’s a health problem that’s serious enough to prevent either of you from getting a clear read, the people who recruited you will probably appreciate knowing. You already have an SA slot, so they might try to accommodate you in some way. Their response is also important data for you, in terms of the kind of group that you might be joining.

Pro-actively looking after your health, and working with the team to find solutions, is a really really important skill, and I’m glad that you’re developing it early in your career.

Thanks appreciate the advice. My issues are both physical and mental. How open  would you recommend I be regarding mental health if it all, given potential stigma?

The industry is getting better, but it hasn’t evolved enough to the point where I’d recommend bringing up mental health, especially before you’ve proven yourself. I say this as someone with a A.C.E. score of 7, who keeps up with therapy in a banking career. Carve out the time that you need to carve out, but don’t bring it to the workplace.

One note here: if your mental health issues involve self-harm, please carefully reconsider banking. Just maintaining mental and physical health through your junior years takes tremendous commitment and sacrifice.

Thanks. Just wondering how I would explain situation to HR without sounding like using mental health as an excuse (was serious and involved hospitalisation), especially if they press me for reasoning.

Not someone who self harms, just currently in a situational difficult period which I fully expect to be recovered from by next year.
