Ideal Path to Global Macro
Hey fellow monkeys,
there have already been some posts about global macro hedge funds, however, I'd be very grateful about some more specific advice in my case. I have finished a business and economics degree at a non-target and will start a master in finance like programme at a UK target school (think Oxbridge, LSE, LBS) this summer. After completion, I would be interested in investment analysis for global macro funds. From what I have read on here so far, however, this is hard to achieve straight out of university. To make matters worse, I do not have any internships relevant to high finance yet. In general, I have very strong analytic skills and I keep up to date on macroeconomic developments and trends, but I also realize that my lack of practice in the field may deter some potential employers. That's why I would like to ask you guys, what is the ideal career trajectory for global macro? Should I pursue an S&T FT (or SA) offer, or should I strive towards research at a BB? Might there be other suitable positions (desk analyst to name one)? Also, should I open my own trading account and develop a track record? And is there any literature you guys highly suggest? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but if some of you could give your two cents that would be great!
Cheers!
I would say trading (FICC) and research are both good ways to start a career in global macro. You should look up Global Macro on linkedin, select some relevant profiles, and take a gander at their career trajectory
Not sure a masters of finance makes sense for global macro. Finance is not macro.
You would be better off doing financial engineering or computer science for global macro. I’m fairly certain all the big macro shops run algos type stuff now to automate trading. Global macro is one part understanding fundamentals and one part figuring out how to develop a trading strategy in those products. It’s not about placing big macro bets all the time. You pay the bills figuring out how to take ticks/points out if the market in between larger bets.
I can assure that the masters definitely has macro relevance. I only used the term master of finance to not give much away. And should I start trading on the side in order to have some trades to talk about?
Sounds like Oxford MFE, in which case you have the option of going straight to macro funds like Rokos, Brevan Howard and the likes. They recruit heavily Oxbridge students, most of them very academically oriented with little finance experience elsewhere from what I'm told. If you have the skills you said, it should be pretty straight forward.
