HF and PE Investor Relations Comp

There’s been a lot of talk recently about buyside IR being a good IB exit opp with sustainable hours. Several posts have mentioned MF comp being roughly $200-300 at the associate level.

Can anybody share their salary or salaries they’ve seen at higher levels? I’m interested in learning how the comp scales.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, compensation in the buyside, particularly in Private Equity, can be quite attractive. While I don't have specific data points for Investor Relations roles, I can share some insights on the general compensation trends in PE from the context provided:

  • Private Equity Associate Compensation: As of September 2023, the average total compensation for a 3rd+ Year Associate in PE was $277k, a 2nd Year Associate was $266k, and a 1st Year Associate was $227k. These figures include base salary, bonus, and potentially other forms of compensation such as carried interest, although the latter is less common at the associate level.

  • Scaling Up: For higher levels, the compensation scales significantly. For example, a Vice President in PE had an average total compensation of $363k, a Director/MD averaged $599k, and a Principal averaged $676k.

While these figures are for PE roles in general and not specifically for Investor Relations within PE firms, they can give you a ballpark of the compensation levels in the industry. Investor Relations roles may have different compensation structures, potentially with a higher base salary and lower bonus structure compared to investment roles, reflecting the different risk and reward aspects of the job.

If you're looking for more specific data on Investor Relations compensation, it might be worth checking out the WSO Company Database or reaching out to professionals in the field for firsthand information.

I’ve seen an avg of $100-120k base.
But if you work at a small firm (you’ll most likely be the only IR or part of a team of ~2 people) and depending on how strong your network is within SFOs/MFOs and HNWIs you can for sure get that number up.
