Information on Oaktree's Global Opportunities Fund

Incoming summer analyst for a MF Credit team. Interested in a more diverse mandate. Big fan of Howard Marks and Oaktree in general.

Questions:

Does the team take analysts out of undergrad?

What would the interview process be for a role like this?

Are they based out of LA (the headquarters) or NY?

What types of credit is most common in the portfolio?

Are any sectors favored?

Thanks in advance!

They do take analysts, believe most start in LA from my understanding. Mandate is very wide and operate up and down the cap stack. SS/Distressed, oppurtunisitc, DL etc

Oaktree is THE player in distressed debt, and their global opps is their flagship fund. Average 22IRR on pretty low risk. Since the 90s none of their funds have returned less than 9% IRR. They take 4 associates a year, mostly LA, some NYC. Really sharp, generally from levfin or RX. All from on cycle. Really interesting approach investigating business along w cap stack. They’re generally not control oriented, that’s their SSG group. SSG group did boardriders and just did curo. Opps has done… well everything.

If you want an idea on what opps does, read caesars palace coup. Great one.
